Life at HSBC isn’t all about the 9 to 5. In fact, a huge part of our graduate programmes is all about getting involved in the wide variety of opportunities available part of the graduate community.

Whether it’s supporting the Alumni team by planning and delivering recruitment events at universities across the country, or organising networking and development events as part of the ET (Executive Trainee) Forum; there truly is an astonishing number of opportunities available.

In this post James, part of the new communications team on the blog, describes his latest fundraising efforts for the GCC (Graduate Communities Committee). Things are about to get muddy, cold and real tough… More...

Since joining the Operational Leadership scheme in September it is clear there is a lot of value in seeking out and embracing opportunities within the bank, something I have expressed elsewhere on the grad blog; in this blog though I want to share 3 challenges new graduates face and how we can make the most of them. This will hopefully provide some useful insight and a flavour of grad life at HSBC!More...

One Month In...Daniel

It’s just hit the end of my first month on the HTS Graduate Scheme and it seems like the perfect opportunity to offer some reflection and share the experience. It’s been a whirlwind; I’ve spent time in Northampton, Birmingham, Chester, Liverpool and Manchester learning vast amounts about the bank and myself in the process. More...

Working in Canary Wharf (or anywhere in London for that matter) the Olympic spirit has been incredibly infectious. You could feel it all around you over the past few months, something big was happening, people were even smiling and talking on the underground! Now how often do you see that?! More...

I never thought that I would experience one of the best months of my life three months into joining the Executive Management (ET) scheme at HSBC. I was fortunate enough to attend the Group Graduate Development Programme (GGDP), a four week programme, which saw 83 graduates from 20 countries travel across the UK together for what proved a most memorable and fulfilling experience. Pascal, Executive Management Trainee

One evening last week I volunteered to help at a charity event run by Kids Company (http://www.kidsco.org.uk/). HSBC encourages volunteering time and a fellow Executive Trainee put me in touch for this opportunity.

“So what do you do for a living?”

Waiting for our briefing, the volunteers naturally got chatting; about the weather, about our link to Kids Co, about the train delays. And then that tricky question came up… “What do you do for a living?” One girl was an anthropology student with a strong benevolent streak, another had devoted an entire year to helping Kids Company. And then the circle of kind volunteers turned their attention to me: “And so what do you do then?” Suddenly I felt an incredible urge to stare at my feet and mumble into my chest. More...

Fun in the office

I would have never envisaged that working for such an illustrious, global organisation such as HSBC would have entailed such fun activities taking place in the work office. There is a slight misconception that working at HSBC on a graduate scheme means ‘work work work’ and don’t get me wrong; no success comes without hard work. More...

All work and no play…I don’t think so

As a new starter at the , I was asked to write a short piece for the blog on my time so far at HSBC. As the title suggests, my focus in this blog will be to let you know how despite working full time and studying for IFS exams, finding time for ‘extra curricular’ activities is not only possible, but a great idea. The Kilimanjaro Experience...

In September 2011, a 46-strong HSBC team climbed Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro for charity, raising over £80,000 for Prince’s Trust and Kids Company. At 5,895m (19,341ft), Kilimanjaro is the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, and 34 members of the team made it all the way to Uhuru Peak at the top. Everyone had their own unique experience of the climb - Pascal, Executive Management Trainee, writes about his own.More...
